Edge Computing

In its simplest form, “edge computing” is about putting an extra processing layer in the network between the end device and a centralized data center, which is commonly located in the cloud. The “edge” moniker implies that this extra layer of computing is as close as possible to the end device, so perhaps it should be called “edge-to-cloud computing”.

The primary reasons for deploying edge computing are to significantly reduce the network processing delay for time-critical applications, and to greatly reduce the amount of data that needs to be sent upstream to the network.

That “edge” could be on a factory floor where intelligent robots are constantly generating data about their work; drones with sensors surveying vast farming operations to identify water and nutrient needs; at a busy hospital collecting patient data, MRIs, and documentation on operations; in a regional law firm assembling discovery data on complex legal cases; and more. While the idea of using a gateway for a remote enterprise office has been around a long time, the sheer growth of network technology and use cases with the Internet-of-Things is causing a rethinking of the entire process.

The shipping case forms its exoskeleton so once full it can be simply closed up and returned to the data center via common carrier or carried as luggage on an airplane.

It can also be controlled remotely and monitored locally with a built-in status display. Data is protected physically with its integral Trusted Platform Module, RAID storage, and shock-mounted components while it is also secured with AES-256 encryption and encoded SSL/TSL paths.
